Hello Monsters!
Oct 10, 2010 at 2:29 pm by The Mayor
Welcome to Gameful. I’m the mayor. I handle the leveling up of worthy monsters.
The HQ are a bit of a mess right now. Loose boards everywhere. I hope you’ve brought your hammer!
Visit my office when you’re ready to level up. To grow big and gameful, you’ll need to do things around the Secret HQ — like join a group, donate monster treats to other monsters, or log in every day for 5 days in a row. (That’s a VERY dedicated monster!)
Whenever you level up, your pet monster grows up a little bit, too. Ah, the circle of monster life.
Show yourself around. If you can’t find something you need, leave me a comment… I’ll be sure to take a break from overseeing HQ construction to help. (Or maybe other monsters will leave you a helpful reply first!)

Hello mayor. o/
Hello everybody! o/
Ah, the siren call of a growing pet…
Treats remind me of wuffiebank. Nice to be here.
I wish I knew what my type of monster was like, before I selected it.
But then the element of surprise would be missing, and what would like be without surprises?
Ah… what is going on? ^^
I like the pink egg, can I keep him?
Yay! I figured out the treats bit. I clicked on “account” in the dark grey bar at the top of the screen and scrolled to the point menu to view point activity, and now I know how one earns points. The glories of inquiry!
I’m hoping the treats can be used to advance a monsters’s interests or character development. Or that we can use treats to ‘vote’ on our favorite gameful challenge entry (other than our own, of course). And I agree, the grey on grey screen is a little hard on the eyes. Or perhaps we can use treats to buy accessories for our monsters? Or if you donate a certain amount you get some other kind of credit (similar to tax rebate) where something happens every time you show good will towards monsterkind? It would promote generosity and positive character development . I love giving away treats! They go straight to my Monster thighs anyway, har har har.
I have no idea how you earn them though. That bit is still a little confusing to me.
Where can i view my monster?
Hey Brock – Have a look at your profile page: http://gameful.org/members/brumple92/
This is brilliant.. well done everybody!
Lee mentioned this up there, but I had a hard time even finding any blogs. I do see the blog link at the top now, so yippee!
I post, but only for the xp!
A blog link should be included in the top nav bar.
Any way we can hook (or link) this up to Facebook, Twitter and such? Synergy is the new energy after all.
I’m confused :S
We’re not sure why that doesn’t always work — we’re looking into it. Right now the best technique is navigating to that person’s profile page and donating treats right there.
Hi Monsters,
When I try to donate points to some one I get an error saying that person doesn’t exist (aw) and they most certainly do. Spelling/case double checked…? Thanks for your help.
When I visit the Mayor’s office, I have no more tasks to complete. I think I have a few more levels to go, no? Can you help? (And as you can tell from this comment, you’ve got me hooked. Thanks for the great work.)
I’m hooked too and now no more tasks either… trying to figure out if level 6 is the end of the game so far? Mister Mayor can you help us?
Last night in the Future of Games teleconference, Mathias Crawford mentioned Jane McGonigal’s game “Cruel 2 B Kind” from 2006. New to me, and sounds fun! http://www.cruelgame.com/
I would love to see pagination links at the bottom of a list as well as the top
Also, I love you.
@chrisbelldesign – Yes, we too are interested in undesirable behavior skews as a result of the Mayoral Challenges. I just added a blog post to serve that purpose, so the first-time-comments don’t distract from other conversations.
http://gameful.org/your-first-blog-post-comments/
I’m interested in seeing how rewards effect seriousness and credibility of comments. I’d hate to see floods of posts to earn the cheap rewards.
Hi there. I’m just commenting right now to get the points.
I will post a real comment after I’ve poked around more.
@joehughes – looking forward to your collection of design patterns. You’ll put them on the wiki, yes?
Re: grinding for the Mayor task, it would be good to have a goofy post that is specific to that task; but on the other hand, this task does get people to visit the post… If not read it… Good to think about, to be sure.
I almost wish there were a dedicated “achievement grinding” blog post, so that people (like me) who were commenting to achieve the mayor task wouldn’t be cluttering up other comment threads.
It makes me wonder: has anyone started collecting design patterns for achievement systems to help minimize grinding, or at least its collateral damage?
Why there is an almost invisible “It’s a serket” at the botto, of the pages?
got to level up. This Mayor character is keeping me running on the hamster wheel. But love the way it gently forces participation.
This grey background plus occasional grey text is difficult on the eyes, but i’m sure it will be all sorted out soon enough! :3
Don’t mind me, I’m just posting this in order to level up.
Oh, and to confirm I can post a comment from my phone. Yeah, that’s the ticket!
Okay, that was terrible.
But still, Kerching!
<extraordinarily insightful comment on the nature of ludicism and ludocracty>

No idea how this comment is going to look – HTML or not etc
Like many gamers, I enjoy quick and easy rewards. Such as getting credit for this post.
I’ll second that!
third that
It would be nice if my monster on the Mayor’s page were labeled as such – I thought that was just a generic little dude!
Will there be any benefit to a higher level or bigger monster?
tadam tadam tadam, advancing in the secret HQ. Where will it end? Hopefully not eaten by a monster!
So far so good! ^_^
@the-mayor When you ask us to:
Find a post you like on Blogs, and add your voice to the conversation.
Is this the blog section where you want this to happen?
@alimpaecher Alex I’m hoping you found out after you made that post
@lauriej Oh no! Let me look into this so you can keep growing…
Thanks Nathan!
I had the same issue, it seems to be affecting most users who have uploaded a photo before completing the Mayor’s first quest.
I was having a similar issue, my Gravatar icon didn’t count towards the Mayor’s task; so, I saved it and uploaded it directly to this site but that still didn’t count towards the task. Finally, I deleted the Avatar that I uploaded which forced it to use my Gravatar icon again and now the Gravatar icon is counting towards the task.
@Nathan I am not sure whether you did something magic behind the scenes, or whether my final attempts at removing pic, logging out, waiting, logging in, adding new pic etc, finally worked – but I did it! THe Mayor agreed I’d done his challenges. Woo hoo! THanks Nathan!
I’m not managing to meet the Mayor’s demand for a profile picture – I’d added one before I got this mayoral challenge anyway, and since have re-added it, and also deleted and put it back. Could it be that “profile picture” isn’t the same as “avatar”? Either way, I’m stuck and can’t help my monster pet grow up any more…
@javier – RSS fied for blog here: http://gameful.org/feed/ and for sitewide activity here: http://gameful.org/activity/feed/ and your personal activity here: http://gameful.org/members/nathan/activity/feed/ (replace nathan with your username)
I’m curious, will the RSS feeds still function once the site goes live given that the URL will change?
It would be great to have an RSS feed set up soon for the blog. That way people could (somewhat) keep tabs on things during the alpha even if they’re not able to log in every day.
And my next question is, how do we delete comments we make that have typos in them such as my last comment?
I would think people should be able to edit or delete their own comments. I’ll have a look.
As the recipient of treats notified?
@rita – I don’t think players are notified about treats received but we will be displaying that information soon. As to what they’re fore… Stay tuned!
@Nathan – it would be great if you could send a note with treat donations. FWIW I donated to you because you’d been helpful
I don’t exactly understand how points/treats work, and when they are rewarded to me. Is that information somewhere?
I think there will be more info about points/treats coming soon but in the mean time you can see what you have accumulated, what has been accumulated site wide, and how points are awarded by going to My Account/Points.
See what Drew Sherman said, main winner is login every day for 250 points…. hurray. Though note to gameful, please give us some more big winners. xx Will post this in the right place.
I’m having fun so far! Out of curiosity, what are these monster treats for?
I’m enjoying myself, loose floorboards and all
Great methodology to push users to be more active; love it!
Yeh until they get stuck in the mayors request and there is no real view on what earns what to collect with every reaction 3 point until i can donate 7500 will take me till Christmas and for now as in every game in this world there is stil no suggestion or a walk through hihi
Is it possible to find people from a specific location? At least it’s not in the sorting options on the peoples page.
Great place you’ve created, thanks!
Under “Members,” there is the Members Directory, and the 2nd line says Advanced Profile Search. Next to that it says “toggle” which lets you search by lots of criteria.
Hello Morbus – Right now the monsters appear on the Mayor page, the home page and in the activity feed. They’ll be coming to your profile page in the near future, where you’ll easily be able to see other people’s monsters as well.
Where can I see my pet monster growing? Sniff.
Agreed! I want to be able to see my monster!
And I want to be able to delete a reply I’ve made!
on your profile
