FreeRice.com & Executive Command- I’ll be presenting these two games at a Teach In for 5th graders tomorrow. FreeRice donates rice to hungry kids when you answer questions right & Executive Command lets them be President! See my blog for more details.  : )

Here’s a video by CBS News on FreeRice: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4047770n
This is a great tool for everyone, kids and adults of all levels.  It’s a very simple site/ game.  It started out as just a vocabulary game but now there are many subjects to play/ practice/ learn.

ENGLISH

MATH

GEOGRAPHY

CHEMISTRY

HUMANITIES

LANGUAGE LEARNING

In addition, the site can be accessed in five languages: Spanish, French, English, Italian, and Chinese.  So if English is not your first language, feel free to switch it up and if you have students who may speak another language at home, they can play in one of these languages or even have their family play!

You do not need to create an account to play.  Just go to http://freerice.com/ and start answering questions.  You can change subjects or the language whenever you want.  For every correct answer, ten grains of rice is donated by sponsors to the World Food Programme.  They say that about 400 grains provides two meals to a person for a day.

Teachers can go to http://freerice.com/teachers to learn how to create groups for classes.

Executive Command is one of many civics games for kids at http://www.icivics.org/games.  This game let’s kids play as President for a four year term.  They get elected, choose their issues, then have to juggle some of the many jobs the president has while time ticks away.  It’s a great overview of what happens in the executive branch.  http://www.icivics.org/games/executive-command

That’s it for now.  I’ll try to post after the teach-in tomorrow with an update.  : )
