Having released about a week ago, Star Wars: The Old Republic is flying pretty high right now. Reports are that player numbers are through the roof, it’s all the buzz on blogs and forums, and SWTOR seems like it’s only going to keep growing.

While I don’t know that I could answer your question directly, I can at least give my experience of the game.

Having sunk quite a few hours into it at this point I can say that I am far more interested in it than I ever was with WoW, or other MMO’s. This is mostly due to the amazingly high quality content of the core 1-50 leveling experience. While some character story lines are better than others, they are all far better than most single player games I’ve experienced.

And I feel the worlds and atmosphere they’ve created are excellent, immersive, and true to the Star Wars universe.

End game content (after level 50) is more of a mixed bag, with the experience being much more like the grind of other MMO’s. My hope is this will get better with time. But in the end, I don’t think the game is as much about that, as exploring the game from each character’s point of view.

I hope it lasts, if it’s this good in the first 2 months, I can’t wait to see what else they come up with.

It’s very interesting to note how much people-power and $ are behind its creation:

“Apparently, Star Wars: The Old Republic cost $200 million. Other interesting details from the Times’ investigation into what it calls a “galactic gamble” include the fact that it was made by 800 people on four continents with an additional 1,000 voice actors (doing three languages) handling 4,000 characters.”

    Interesting…

I knew it was out. I knew it was growing in leaps and bounds (but then, they all do in the beginning), but I wasn’t aware it was being labeled “golden boy”.

I’m betting it won’t stay that way for long. A year from now it will have a significant cadre of loyal players but the bulk of the population will have either moved on to something else or gone back to whatever they were playing before. The market now is pretty well saturated and unlikely to see any major growth in the near term. Even Facebook games have begun seeing active player populations decline.

As smartphones continue to grow in number and improve in features that will be the next major market. At least, that’s where I’m laying my bets down.

I think you’re being kind when you give it a year Brian. I think it will be free-to-play within 6 months if they do not fix their customer service issues. Without a doubt it is ‘The Worst’ I have ever experienced in the gaming industry.

The game itself I thought was okay, but for me it didn’t have that something special that makes me want to play an MMO and I canceled after my first month. I think they may have made a very bad choice too when they picked an unproven engine for the game. Especially when you consider that the company who developed the engine is known primarily for their MUDs.
