    - Because everyone needs a place to start. =)

Tell us a few things about yourself:
Are you a student? a professor? perhaps the founder of your own gaming company? Do you like to or want to create games and if so, what kind of games?
What’s a random fact about you? Let us know!

    I’ll start!

Hi, my name’s Katherine and I am a freshman Computer Science major at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. About a year ago, I realized that after spending much of my years gaming, I wanted to take the next step from playing games to making them, specifically, iPhone application and Flash game creation as well as large-scale MMORPG development. I’m interested in the educational aspect of games, especially in incorporating Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as the telling of inspiring stories. I hope to make my ideas a reality very soon.
Random Fact: I love Pokemon and Hayao Miyazaki’s films. I hope to create something as timeless as them.

    Now it’s your turn. =)

Hi. My name is Joe and I’m the president of New Hope Products Company, a Maine-based product development company. NHPC has had good success creating board games in the past 10 years with 20 licenses that have generated over 4 million game units sold.

My passion is not in board games however – instead it is in creating serious games that can positively impact our world.

I have just started a new company with three partners, two of which are international partners. We are about half way along on prototyping our first serious game platform. This serious game platform is quite different than typical serious games being developed today. We cannot wait to share it with the world.

Random Fact: My game Flickin’ Chicken was nominated for Outdoor Toy of the Year this year.

I am Andy Babb, 42 y/o. My games addiction started circa 1976 when my parents got Pong. From there I moved to Atari (played at my friends’ houses as my folks wouldn’t go *that* far), Simon, tons of Mattel Electronics games, I finally saved and bought a used Intellivision, my friend Chris has Choplifter on his computer which was great, my friend Peter has Zork which was also great, thousands of quarters at the local 7-11 went into Pac-Man, Asteroids and the like, college saw a lot of Nintendo, post-graduate saw a lot of Playstation/2/3 and everything made by Blizzard, played lots of Xbox/360 at work, now have a bunch of rug rats and we play tons on the Wii, and finally I play everything I can get hands on on iOS.

I never got into MUDs, MOOs or D&D. I dabbled in CCGs for a while, mostly MTG, but was never more than a rank amateur.

In 1997 I began my games career at SegaSoft. From ther I moved to LA and joined TDK Mediactive, which got bought by Take 2, which put me into the 2K Games label. I then became president of a cell phone game company called In-Fusio and for the past five years have been president of a small games company called Brandissimo.

All of my career roles have been on the business side so I guess that makes me a Suit.

I stumbled upon Gameful and look forward to engaging more.

How would you include computer science in a game. I have thought chemisty, and history would be relatively simple to include but incorporating math and other skills I haven’t really been able to wrap my mind about.

      Hey guys,

I love games! I think my earliest video games came from my folks’ Apple II GS playing games like Carmen San Diego and Tank Wars. We graduated eventually to the original Sega Master System and lived on games like Phantasy Star, Golden Axe, etc and now I’ve grown up to bigger AAA titles like my most recent toy, Starcraft II.

I’m now a producing audio designer and music specialist just getting started in the gaming industry. I’m very interested in iOS and Android games, console and PC games. I’m currently looking for ways to bring my knowledge and experience with games and audio to great use.

I am a social studies teacher working at a local middle school. I am 28 and a history major from UF and FIU. After a months in the classroom, I realized that the basic instruction that I had been trained to deliver was too boring. Students lost focus and began to peel away. I step my game up ”on stage” in front of them and it worked a lot better but still was not enough. I was offered a Promethean Board after my first year and then it al changed. I was engulfed in technology after that and my class is so much more fulfilling. Students are learning more because they are simply ”into it”. The aren’t brighter because of the technology itself, but because they are no longer sitting stagnant in a classroom looking at the motionless pages of a textbook.

My band’s page is this: http://www.facebook.com/midnightnotes but apart from writing rock music I can write many different genres of music by using midi programms and plugins. I may not be capable of programming games BUT I can compose, orchestrate and produce anything from classical, electronic, folk to ethnic musics because I can use programms that use real samples of real instruments played in studio by real people and put them in order to make a music piece. Apart from that I am trying to better myself as a composer by studying and playing all different kinds of music I can find, so my compositions can have whichever character I choose. So I believe that making music for games would be an ideal work for me to do. If you want music for a project I would be happy to write it for you. Contact me in midnightnotesband@gmail.com Good work everybody! I truly believe in this campaign because and I think it’s high time games became serious and practically beneficial because they can. They can also become sourcces of information about situations people are unlikely to deal with in everyday life but are a reality for other people or countries, a means of better mutual understanding and social awakening. I have millions of ideas, some I become more focused on at times, and I can’t wait to start making all of them, although most of them will require a team. I’m a high school graduate as of June 2011 and looking to start college in the spring but in the meantime I just started learning JavaScript and UnityScript with a free online course site and the game Code Hero (which you should check out by the way, very helpful game).

I made an account on here because it looked helpful and since it was geared towards more inspirational and helpful games I was curious. I love games that have an inspirational theme behind them. I’ve never played Flower before but an upcoming game called Journey for the PS3 has me excited to uncover what mysteries that lie within the mechanics and gameplay. It also makes me wish I had a PS3 lol.

But yeah for the most part, I’m just starting out with programming and I plan on learning a lot and growing my skills for a while before I start on a big project. Let’s see how far I go!

      Greetings Party People, I’m Jade.

Games of all kinds have played an integral role in my life from as far back as I can remember (first epic win: a 3rd grade tetherball victory against an 8th grader). It’s only recently that I have an opportunity to make it a career. More about that a little later.

I’ve been in media sales most of my life, helping businesses leverage advertising and marketing for various media over the years. I recently graduated from law school at University of Kansas where I specialized in Media, Law and Technology (says the certificate).

As I was coming out of my CA bar exam funk, I found myself in a conversation with a director of a science center at a major university who wants to produce a video game as party of his educational outreach. So, now the law may be on hold as we try to find ways to use games to reach young Americans and engage them in math and science.

I particularly want to help those most left behind – poor kids in general, who are most likely to be Black or Latino and don’t see themselves in the digital economy.

I look forward to getting to know you as many of you as I possible. Y’all seem so fun!

My name is Duane and I am a software engineer by day, game monkey by night. I do a lot of tabletop RPG stuff, writing, running and playing. I’m looking for ways to make what I already do better, and to raise the stakes on it significantly – more ways to integrate props into the game mechanics, telling better stories through games, etc.

I once won an award in the FFA.

  • Avatar Image Craig, a level 6 monster with 11 posts — 1 year, 3 months ago:

    Hi Duane,

I just realized this is an introduction forum (came here off the activity page) so I’m probably not supposed to reply here but since I’ve written this whole thing might as well send it anyway.

I haven’t played pen and paper RPG’s for years because my community is literally scattered to the ends of the earth and most of them don’t have the time to game anymore. But I played a lot when I was younger so lets see if I can give you 3 pieces of advice from way back then. I’m probably telling you how to suck eggs but who knows maybe there will be a kernel of usefulness.

First is always adapt to the game system you are playing and the people you are designing for. MERP with it’s realistic combat system killed people dead pretty quick. I always GM’d with hidden dice roles by the NPC’s so I could tweak things a little. One of our group managed to wipe 5 of us 25 minutes into a game he was running once by rolling repeated open ended crits. I didn’t want to be that guy. Also we developed as gamers and hack and slash was fine at the very start but pretty soon everyone was hungry for challenge, and plot twists, and awesome characters. I’m sure some of the campaigns would have been best sellers if any of us had written them down.

Second is to mix it up sometimes. One of my most fun memories was being pulled aside before the session and being told that my character had been possessed so I had to secretly sabotage the parties mission without anyone suspecting. Of course no one was particularly happy with me afterwards since none of them suspected a thing. But it was a cool twist to shake things up a bit. We also did a campaign once where all our real life selves were transformed into characters and we played ourselves. Determining the character stats was fun in itself with arm wrestling, push ups, jumping and hopping etc to show just where we were in terms of strength, endurance etc. Amazing how competitve people are when it gets to the core of things. And kind of fun to save the world as ourselves rather than as a character. The GM said ‘prove it’ a lot on that campaign I seem to recall. ‘I really can jump a 4 ft fence covered in blackberry canes no problem’…’prove it’.

Third would be that sometimes props work and sometimes they detract from the game play in ways you don’t expect. Once we started playing with figures they were a mixed blessing. People couldn’t argue about what they’d said earlier about what their character was doing because it was all laid out on the mat. But it slowed gameplay down and ruined some of the imagination aspect. We tried sound props but the equipment was pretty ordinary back then and it came across as cheesy rather than as intended. We also did some lighting for mood shifts that worked ok. One game our GM had his sister burst in the door at a particularly tense moment. That one worked. I used well written descriptions in books I read to base some of my designs on and that worked pretty well. We are talking 24 years ago so I’m a little rusty. But my boys are 4 and 5 and I have the 2nd edition basic and expert D&D rules to blood them on in a few years. Then Palladium and a few other systems. Going to have to have my A game on to compete with Madagascar Karts on the PS3.

Make it epic whatever your story and plot. P.S. What is the FFA?

All good points, certainly. An extended discussion I think is outside the context of this thread, and I’d hate to derail it from people introducing themselves. But expect a message soonish.

      A Terrible Idea · 1 year, 3 months ago

One thing I will add though (adding it here in case others are interested) – 4 and 5 isn’t too young to start. And you can still compete with Madagascar Karts PS3.

      Two solid suggestions are :

      Happy Birthday Robot – http://www.evilhat.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=68_73

This was a Kickstarter project from some folks I know in passing – solid people involved in this project. It’s designed for very young players. The PDF is 10 dollars, but the book is beautiful, comes with the PDF, and is $25 bucks.

      RPGKids – http://newbiedm.com/rpgkids/

This one is $2.99 in PDF, is aimed at players 4-7, and has been gone over really really well. Really solid people involved in this one too.

You can pick up both for less than the price of a new D&D book, and they’re aimed squarely at your don’s age group.

    Hello everyone.

My name is Grant and I am a majoring in Finance at the University of South Florida.

I have been gaming for decades now and love absolutely everything about this industry, the raw creativity, the enthusiasm and the broad demographics of the fans.

My tastes in games are varied and widespread. I could never commit to a single genre.

The reason I chose to major in Finance is because over the years I have seen many promising companies just vanish and their games with them. I long ago became aware of the difficulties early start ups have in maintaining a steady growth and developing a sustainable profit to continue operations. The truth is, many promising designers have fantastic products and exceptional ideas, but they don’t know anything about the business side of reality. The money just simply runs out or the debt becomes overbearing.

So it is my endeavor to soon use my financial expertise to help young publishers and start up companies achieve the dream of financial independance and profit sustainability that will keep their games on the market for all to enjoy.

Hiya! I’m Kat, avid gamer and technology afficionado. I’ve gamed for years, everything from Mario to MMO’s. I currently value games that are fun, engrossing, and offer a way to connect with others. Games can foster an interaction that is currently a sidebar to real life, but I’m very interested in ways to integrate the two. I come from a psychology perspective, not a game designer or programmer, and my work demands mean that this will be a hobby, not a huge time commitment.

I’m currently thinking about how casual gaming (like facebook) could help motivate the housebound. I’m playing Ravenwood Fair on fb right now (created by John Romero) and created a chat room for players. It’s amazing how many are housebound, either from snowstorms, finances (it’s cheaper to stay home and not be tempted to spend), or various emotional/psychological reasons. I’m sure we’ve all experienced the hypnotic lull of the internet, where once we spend a few hours there, it’s very hard to get up from the chair. It would be great to have a facebook game or support system, where players could pick small, do-able goals (“go on a 5 minute walk”, “do 10 minutes of housework”) in the facebook context that they are already comfortable with. These are people who (mostly) don’t have iphones to play motivational games like Booyah, or find something like ChoreWars complicated.

If you’re looking for someone to run your idea by who has an professional psychology background but is a “real person”, who reads things like http://www.insidesocialgames.com/ and http://massively.joystiq.com/ every day for fun, here I am. =)

I prefer real world 3d games such as board games, ping pong, billiards, card games, etc. I feel these games have a social depth to them unfounded anywhere online or in a console. There exists no medium through which players interact, as players are interacting directly with one another. I really enjoy true 3d games that integrate real world skills such as Monopoly –> Real Estate, Scrabble —> Vocabulary, and

Games like WoW come and go but these are timeless. Learning through play is the best way to learn anything. Ironically though, when I graduate I don’t want be the next Einstein or Tesla. Instead I’d like to own my own business called (Working name don’t hate) “Ideas Inc.” The premise is a think tank designed to conceive the “Next Big Things” through optimizing everything using math and physic concepts w/o the crap. My main objective in life isn’t to solve problems, just make some cool sh*t. The main reason I jumped onto Gameful is to be inspired by the creativity of others. Games may not be my passion in life, but what they stand for is definitely a part of it.

Hello everyone, my name is Chris and I’m a sophomore Psychology major at the University of Grant Macewan in Edmonton, Alberta. I am very much interested in all things psychology related, from the biological to the behavioral; from development to personality sciences .I would like to explore the relationship between the brain/mind and environment, and in fact I think it’s high time that we started realizing what if means for those two things to be one and the same. They say that when you are a hammer, all your problems look like nails. I just… don’t know where I can be found in the toolbox, so I don’t know what problems I’m going to solve.

I want to solve all of the problems.

I want to make myself and my experience of life better.

I have lost everything I carry around on my person at least once (glasses, wallet, keys etc.), except my Nintendo DS.

    I love science and you.

I woke up this morning, came to work, then had my mind blown by Jane McGonigal’s TED video. Where should I begin to help?

Haha, think of ideas for fun games that have wider implications than just ”pew pew” ”kill internet dragon” (not that that isn’t really, really fun), and throw them around with other people here. If you’re like me and not talented enough to actually bring the game into reality, at least we can help with the creative development part =).

Welcome! You’re in the right place.
Ask yourself if you’re a brainstormer of ideas, a developer of your own creation, a programmer to put the idea into action, a graphic artist to give games that extra boost in visuals, a tester for bugs and errors, or perhaps a mix and matching of everything. There are a bunch of ongoing projects shared on these forums where you to browse around. Make your mark. ;)

Hey everybody, my name is James, and I’m a software engineering and game design student at McMaster University. I attended McGonigal’s talk at U of T on Monday, and was intrigued. I’ve begun to read through Reality is Broken, and it’s quite fascinating. Anyways, hopefully I’ll be able to, once I’m done my education, put my skills to good use here!

Hello all. My name is Tristan and I am right now a Lead Bookseller at my local Barnes and Noble, and also an intern with the curator at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. I have been playing games since the early nineties, from action games to educational computer games. Since then i have been an avid gamer and recently realized I could make an impact as a game designer. i have a History degree from Cornell College, and an interest in Art History. It is my dream to create games that help teach history while still having a great story and game play. As of now I am half-way through “Reality is Broken” and am greatly inspired by it to create games that have a positive impact on society.

Hi, my name is paul t. horan and I’ve been waiting a long time for gaming objectives like this one = “make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation without ecological damage or disadvantage to anyone.”* to become much more of a robust reality.

Never stopped being a Student (gonna turn sixty in less than 2 years & still appreciate feeling young @ heart : )

Recently succeeded at hosting a simple contest for young eco geniuses** (also failed at launching a few other projects : )

Currently enthused by our human capacity for real, live FUN to fuel evolutionary leaps beyond our species’ traditional mess-making tendencies.***

The kinds of games I’m aiming to help create include one now being nurtured by a colleague named Mark, whom I first met via Open Sustainability Network and with whom I later began collaborating via a Coalition of the Willing**** follow up swarm.

Just one example of the various current challenges that Mark, me and our esteemed swarm members now face involves integrating both imagery & content from this CotW film with well designed gaming activities that all sorts of good folks would enjoy playing. For instance, in the first 120 seconds of the film, the question “What happened?” is asked with respect for the failure of so-called international “leaders” to begin resolving a global wicked problem. Apparently, aside from other wicked problems like corruptive influences, one of the things that happened was neglecting to resolve real, live “global” climate crises because key players entered the playing field wearing self-limiting,”national” blinders. Essentially, they brought the wrong equipment to the game.

So, if I may include a question in response to this question “what kind of games?”, what kinds of games can help us humans gain an actually “global” perspective so that sufficiently large numbers of key players bring requisite equipment to our species’ emergent “climate crises resolution games”? Such are the kinds of games I need to play …

Random fact = 1 of my all time favorite butt-kickings: a pick up basketball game with a young fella who later became known as “Doctor J”

Thanks for sharing the video with the fantastic dunks by Julius Erving, really enjoyed it & put a smile on my face. Nothing to be ashamed of BTW, having your butt kicked by Doctor J…

COOL! So glad it produced a smile for you, Wijnand. Far from being ashamed, that game’s endured as one of my proudest b-ball playing extended moments. One of my team mates described his favorite moment from that game as having his jump shot from the top of the key being blocked by Julius and the ball landing in an adjacent village.
Here’s another reference to but-kickings we can be proud of =

So I posted this as my status, but this seems like a much more appropriate place for it.

Hey guys, just found the site. Looks amazing so far I imagine I’ll be spending a lot of time here. A bit about me: I am a long time game player some real-life games like, Magic The Gathering, and Settlers of Catan. Some Video games like, Everquest, WoW, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. I have had an interest in math and problem solving my whole life. And first became interested in programming in middle school. I wrote my first ever programs in QBasic on a DOS machine. In highschool I learned Java and competed in many programming contests. I am now working toward a computer science degree at my local community college. In my spare time I write applications for the Android mobile OS. Programming for Android has become almost an obsession of mine, the ability to program a computer that is many times more powerful than the first computers I ever used, and be able to carry that computer around with me everywhere I go is too awesome of a concept for me. If anyone ever needs help with any Android related work feel free to get in contact with me. I am always looking for something fun to work on =)

    Hello, world of Gameful.
I go by Arc out here in cyberspace.
I’ve been a gamer for 18 of my 20 years, some would say even longer — Gaming extends beyond entertainment for me, into philosophy and self-development. It’s something I pride myself on.
I’m also a writer, but as an avid gamer, so much of my writing, my characters and stories — they don’t belong in a book. They’d do so much better in a game.
That’s why I have been trying to learn the arts of game development and design.
    Fun facts:
I am an IT student at the University of Phoenix online, first year.
My avatar is really me, and was drawn by my beloved fiancée.
I also love to make music, and am practicing making arrangements via PC, and I play guitar (well) and piano (less well).
