Phd programs/Academic research into gaming and depression

Is there anyone who might be able to point me toward a PhD program in psychology that is studying games and depression? I'm working on a game similar in spirit to SuperBetter but targeting a much more severely depressed population. I have a fairly solid design already that I'm hoping to turn into a dissertation if I can find the right place to go.Anyone have any suggestions?See More

Student, Lifelong Gamer
When it comes to my game-making career, I'm ...
a newbie (no game experience ... yet!)
Kinds of games I’m best known for making or want to be known for making someday (check all that apply) ...
PC Games - single player, Educational games, Health games, You should add another category!

Experience and mentorship, School credit
Games you’ve worked on ...
Assisted in designing some tabletop RPG rules and story (most home brew, occasionally working with a freelancer for White Wolf Games). I have also participated in 'destruction testing" TT RPG rules systems to error check them.
What abilities would you bring to a collaboration?
My primary training is as a psychologist, specializing in Human Factors. I have a lot of experience playing electronic and analog games of all kinds. I have also managed and done some analysis, modification and design of game systems.
Three games you’ve played that have changed your life:
Original D&D. Not a video game, but definitely a life-changer. My first really good LARP. Again, not a video game, but still a life changer. Final Fantasy 7. The first game that really communicated storytelling with the game design itself.

Bio

I'm a 34 year old psychology student in my final year of undergrad.  I'm headed to grad school (somewhere) to work on my PhD next year.  I have had a fascination with games and game design forever.  I've had a lot of personal experience with psychology, bot the good kind and the bad kind.

I came to game design from a few angles.  One is as a player.  It's a natural step from playing a game and complaining about the system to taking a step up and fixing the system.  The second is through networking.  I happen to know a number of professional game designers.  One of my best friends is a freelance author and analog game designer.  It's interesting to hear about her work.  The third is as a psychologist.  Both Human Factors and Positive psychology cross over into games and gaming.  As both of those are of huge personal and professional interest to me, it was a natural step.

My current project is a game that is designed to treat depression.  It is very much unlike Dr McGonigal's game in that it is designed to treat the most persistent depression in the most resistant type of player: the severely depressed patients in an inpatient mental hospital setting.  Because of that, something overt like SuperBetter will not work.  Severely depressed patients will often reject things that are overly cheerful.  Therefore, the game has to be a game in which the treatment is integrated into the way the game is played.  It has to be disguised, as it were.  And that is what I am designing.

I have a fairly comprehensive design already laid out.  Now I have to prove it works and implement it.  I expect that to take the rest of my undergraduate career as well as be my doctoral dissertation.  I'm here to soak in as much wisdom and advice as I can while possibly helping others in the process.

I would love to hear from anyone interested in my project, as I am a total nerd and love to talk about it.  Feel free to contact me about this or anything else at any time.

Thanks and have a great day!
